How to Get Started with your Email Newsletter as a Small Business Owner

Email marketing is the best way to communicate for your business.

On average, businesses make .25$ to $1 PER CONTACT PER MONTH serving their email list.

If you’re not using email marketing, you’re leaving money on the table, and you’re forgoing your permanent access to your own contacts.

If you're like, yes, Phoebe, I get it, I'm ready, I signed up for Flodesk, and now what on earth do I do???

I've got you! Here are some tips to get started on your email list. (And if you already have a list or are transferring from a different email marketing app or have let your list go a little cold, these tips can still apply to you!)

  1. Sign up with Flodesk, our favorite email app. Click here to get 50% off your first year and your first 2 weeks free to try it out.

  2. Transfer the contacts you already have. If you don't have any ask your friends and family if you can add them. IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT TO START COLLECTING EMAIL ADDRESSES AT CRAFT FAIRS AND IN-PERSON EVENTS!

  3. Use your social media to gain more contacts. Create a form in Flodesk and you'll give out that link to get sign ups. Give your community a reason to sign up, offer them a discount or a freebie. If you give them a discount of a freebie, make sure to set up an automation with an email going out when they sign up with the discount or freebie. You can do this through Flodesk's “Workflo's"

  4. Come up with a plan on what you're going to talk about. The best newsletters give advice or tips or are conversational. Yes you want to share information about sales and upcoming events, but perhaps you want to share more behind the scenes like why you got started in your business or why your product is important. Maybe you come up with a weekly or monthly theme.

  5. Send out your first email! Just do it! Introduce yourself!

  6. Stay consistent. Add it to your calendar, determine if you're going to send weekly or monthly emails. The more emails you send, the more connected you will stay with your community, and the more sales you make. Don't start with “I'm going to send 3 emails a week,” start with something manageable, then work your way up.

If this information is way too much, or not enough, and you need a little more support, we've got a mini email marketing workshop you can take on your own time.
